tldr: No. Claude Code isn't on Claude's Free plan. The lowest-priced plan that includes it is Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly), or you pay per token through the API.
No, Claude Code is not free. Anthropic leaves it off the Free plan, so you pay one of two ways: a paid Claude subscription, starting with Pro at $20 a month, or API tokens billed per use through a Claude Console account. Installing the CLI costs nothing. Running it needs one of those two.
So why does "free Claude Code" have thousands of searches a month? YouTube. The "free forever" videos keep Claude Code's terminal interface and swap the model underneath for a free one from OpenRouter or a local Ollama server. That isn't Claude, and Anthropic doesn't support it.
Is Claude Code free?
Every paid Claude plan includes it. Here's what each one costs.
| Plan | Price | Claude Code? |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Yes |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | Yes |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | Yes |
| Team, Standard seat | $25 a seat monthly, $20 billed yearly | Yes |
| Team, Premium seat | $125 a seat monthly, $100 billed yearly | Yes |
| Enterprise | $20 a seat a month, billed yearly, 20 seat minimum, plus usage at API rates | Yes |
Prices checked on October 28, 2026, on claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's Max plan help article. They don't include tax. Anthropic lists yearly Pro as both $17 a month and $200 up front, and the two don't multiply exactly ($17 x 12 is $204).
How much does Claude Code cost per month?
For one developer it's $20 a month on Pro, or $100 to $200 on Max if you code with it all day.
Pro is the entry point, with at least 5x the usage of Free per five-hour session, billed monthly or yearly.
Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session, billed monthly only. It also includes monthly API credits for the Claude Platform: $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x.
Team is for 2 to 150 people. A Standard seat gets more usage than Pro, and a Premium seat gets 5x a Standard seat.
Enterprise charges $20 a seat plus every token at API rates, so the bill follows what your team runs.
One catch applies to every plan. Claude Code shares a single usage pool with Claude chat on web, desktop and mobile. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top. When you hit the limit, you wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates.

The jump from Pro to Max is 5x in price for 5x the usage, and Max 20x doubles the price again for 4 times the usage of Max 5x.
How much does Claude Code cost on the API?
On the API there's no monthly fee: you pay per million tokens, from $0.10 for input on Haiku 5.5 up to $50 for output on Fable 5.1.
| Model | Input, per million tokens | Output, per million tokens |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
| Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 |
Haiku 5.5 prices apply to prompts up to 100K tokens. Longer prompts cost $0.50 in and $2.50 out. Batch processing saves 50%, and prompt caching prices are on the same pricing page. Prices checked on October 28, 2026.

Output costs 5x input on every model in the table.
Anthropic's Claude Code costs page gives a real-world figure: across enterprise deployments, the average is about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 per developer per month. Ninety percent of users stay under $30 per active day. At that average, two active days on the API cost more than a month of Pro, though Pro caps how much you can do in a session. API users can run /usage inside Claude Code to see what the current session has cost at list price. On Pro or Max that dollar figure isn't what you pay, because the usage is included in your subscription.

Based on Anthropic's enterprise average of about $13 per developer per active day. Subscription plans also cap usage per session.
Can you use Claude Code for free?
Officially, there are two ways: a 7-day guest pass from someone on Pro or Max, or six months of Max 20x through Anthropic's open source program.
Guest passes. Eligible Pro and Max subscribers can share a limited number of guest passes (run /passes to see yours). Each gives someone new to paid Claude plans seven days of Pro, Claude Code included. It needs a card and converts to paid Pro unless you cancel.
Claude for Open Source. Anthropic gives qualifying maintainers six months of Max 20x at no cost. The bar is real: for example, 500 or more dependent repos or 200,000 or more monthly downloads. The terms cap the program at 10,000 recipients.
That's the full list. We found no free student plan and no standing discount on Anthropic's pricing page. Its Education plan is sold to universities, not to individual students.
The "free forever" videos are unofficial. The popular setups change a few environment variables so Claude Code sends requests to OpenRouter's free models or to Ollama running on your machine. Anthropic's gateway docs say it doesn't support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models. Free cloud models come with rate limits, and local models need a machine that can run them.

On Pro or Max, it's already included. For occasional use, pay per token on the API. For heavy daily use, pick Max. To stay under $20 a month, read on.
What does a coding agent cost if Claude Code is too much?
Several official options cost $0 to $10 a month, each with tighter limits, different models or a different workflow.
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Codex on ChatGPT Free | $0 | Codex included, with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app (subject to rollout) |
| ChatGPT Go | $8 a month | Codex included, with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app (subject to rollout) |
| GitHub Copilot Free | $0 | Limited chat and agent usage, including Copilot CLI |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10 a month | $15 a month in AI Credits ($10 base plus a $5 flex allotment that can change) |
| OpenCode Go | $10 a month | Low-cost coding models for OpenCode or another agent |
| Buildful Pro | $10 a month | 1,000 tasks, each returned as a pull request |
For reference, Claude Pro is $20 a month. Prices checked on October 28, 2026, on each tool's pricing page.

Buildful: 1,000 coding tasks for $10 a month works differently: you describe a change in the browser instead of steering a terminal agent. It picks the right open-weight model for each task and opens a pull request on your GitHub repo, with your checks already run. On paid plans you can also pick frontier models like Claude or GPT with prepaid credit.
What does the code cost you after it ships?
More than the agent, if nobody tests it end to end.
A $10 agent and a $200 agent both write bugs. The expensive part is the checkout flow that breaks on a Friday deploy and stays broken until a customer emails. Review bots catch some of it, but AI code review isn't enough to prove a user can still sign up, pay and log in. Faster code generation didn't shrink QA budgets either, a pattern we call the 2026 quality tax.
Bug0 sells that check. A forward-deployed engineer builds tests on Bug0 AI for the flows your revenue runs through, and they run on every deploy. When one fails, the engineer confirms it's a real bug before you hear about it.
